The passages and questions are built from real, citable sources and aligned to real grade-level standards:

Standards (Illinois = Common Core): questions are tagged to the actual Illinois Learning Standards for English Language Arts, which incorporate the Common Core (ISBE, adopted 2010). Grade 5 uses RL.5/RI.5/L.5; Grade 1 uses Grade 1 ELA (ISBE brochure) — RL.1/RI.1/L.1. Full standard text: corestandards.org.
Question style & complexity: modeled on real i-Ready at-home instructional packets (Curriculum Associates) for each grade.
Reading pace (shown to grown-ups only): Hasbrouck & Tindal 2017 oral-reading-fluency norms (end-of-G5 ~139–194 WCPM; end-of-G1 median ~60).
Text level: CCSS deliberately leaves the K–1 band unquantified (CCSS Appendix A); Grade 1 is calibrated to the i-Ready end-of-Grade-1 (Late-1) band as a practical proxy.
Story content: real public-domain works — Project Gutenberg (Aesop, Burgess, Potter, Andersen, folk tales) and factually-accurate biographies/articles — adapted faithfully to each reading level. Never invented.
